We made play-dough for our #ArtsyWednesdays today.

It’s rather an on and off activity for us, we haven’t done this in a while. I used to make play-dough a lot when he was a toddler and he gradually lost interest. He likes to measure and mix the stuff himself so that is always an incentive. Plus he likes to experiment with the colors, mix the food coloring and see what he will get. This is the coolest part.

Here’s the receipe I used for each bach of color:

1/2 cup water, 1 tbsp oil, 1/4 cup salt, 1 tsp cream of tartar (creme de tartre), 1/2 cup flour, food coloring of your choice

Mix all the ingredients except flour, heat in a saucepan without boiling until salt is relatively dissolved. Remove from heat and add flour. Knead until the flour is well incorporated and the dough doesn’t feel sticky anymore. You may have to add some more flour.

I bought the cream of tartar from my local drug store, it is a white powder acting as a preservative. Apparently it makes the dough more elastic and last a bit longer, but you can skip it if you don’t have any. I also made play dough without it and the result is quite similar. Anyway homemade playdough dries faster than the chemical version and must be stored in a dry airtight container.

It’s more fun if you can add some other craft tools like pipe cleaner, fake feathers, eyes etc. I buy my crafting stuff at Jumbo or Manor.
